Blue Eyed/Brown Eyed Diversity Training Exercise

Jane Elliott, a third grade teacher in 1969, believed that white people wouldn’t act against racism until they have experienced it emotionally themselves.

The "blue eyed/brown eyed" exercise was originally developed by Jane Elliott for all her white third graders in Riceville, Iowa about the time Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. The intent was to give her students some idea of racial prejudice.

She divided her class by eye color and subjected the blue-eyed children to a variety of discriminatory acts. The result--they lost self-esteem and competence. The same exercise has been repeated in a variety of forums, always having the same results.

This video gives viewers a harsh yet realistic look at the devastating results of discrimination.
